Firewall -

By default, the firewall rules allow for all outbound and denies all inbound activity.
Isn't the free version of Zone Alarm still better?

That certainly sounds like something that needs addressing. I thought that the Firewall in Vista was supposed to be 2-way. By default, ZoneAlarm denies everything until you give express permission.

My understanding is it still does not support controlling outbound traffic, that is available in the Microsoft Advanced Security Configuration MMC. Its difficult to use, so I would recommend using a third party solution such as Zone Alarm, BlackIce or Tiny. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Yeah, for home users I think that they should stick to third-party firewalls like ZA or Kerio if they want a more full-featured firewall. Because my build is the ultimate edition, I've got the WF Advanced. I looked at it briefly and it is definitely a geekfest. My guess is they won't be including it in the editions aimed at home users, but of course I don't know that for certain. I *do* know for certain that very few home end users would be able to do anything with it except screw up their systems.

Agreed, setting it up too is not a breeze, you have to add it as snap in and configure it in detail to get it working properly. Its not for faint of heart. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

To be honest, the only reason I use the Windows Firewall even on my XP machines, is just to stop attacks from the Blaster worm which hits the svchost.exe every time.

Well, I do use the Windows Firewall on the XP boxen and it is fine. I

used to have Sygate personal on there but it got strange. The key is to have educated users and my users (my sons!) are very educated as to how to use Windows safely and as to what will happen to them if they do not. ;-)

Does anyone know of a free software firewall that works with Vista Beta 2, or is the built in one sufficient?

Actually, there are two Firewalls in Windows Vista, the default protects the user from inbound protections. If you want outbound protection capabilities, you have use the Windows Firewall with Advance Security, located under Control Panel > Administrative Tools.
To learn more about using this new Firewall, check out the following link: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0106.mspx -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

very user friendly at a quick glance but I will try it when I have re-installed Vista, got it all horribly wrong trying to restore a image backup.

Wow, it looks like this thing is designed for use by the IT department, only, and then only after attending a MS seminar. The market for third-party firewalls should remain very good.

>well, i am having the same problem. i did what you said, but it didnt work.i have vista, but it wont start up because of a firewall or internet connection.i dont know what to do.

After I installed Vista I found that the Sygate Personal Firewall I had been using would no longer work. I turned on the Windows Firewall and uninstalled Sygate. Is the Windows firewall ok to use, or should I get another firewall such as Sygate - but one that works with Vista.
Thanks for your help on this and the earlier post about AVG - you people are a big help to me and my new found "Beta Buddy" <G>

I been using Zone Alarm for years, and like Sygate, it does not work with Vista. As for the Windows Firewall working - who knows? It certainly is not designed for end users, it's designed for IT people.
One thing I do know, it only monitors inbound traffic which IMO is only half-done.

Thanks Joe - saves me the trouble of trying Zone Alarm. I had used ZA for a long time also. Bill

Neither statement is true.
Windows Firewall in Vista can monitor both incoming and outgoing traffic, unlike the XP version. By default, monitoring of outgoing is turned off but can be toggled on.
It is designed for end-users.

How about some info on how to turn on outbound monitoring? Does it provided pop-ups like this?:
http://home.cfl.rr.com/jbmsbink/WGAscreenshot.jpg
I stand corrected on outbound traffic monitoring part of my statement, but stand by my other part which is - Windows firewall is not end-user friendly. It's designed for IT people who can set it up in a corporate enviroment so that end users can't fiddle with it.

This statement leaves me almost speechless. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I read it. You sound sincere, and I believe you, but I'm absolutely nonplused. Please elaborate.
